Paramedic Review: Renal Emergencies

Dialysis patients…the bane of our existence. They are always sick, and during emergencies, their normal treatment may be ineffective. In this session, Dr. Young, a two-time renal transplant patient, explores the pathophysiology of renal-related emergencies. Objectives 1. Participants should have a thorough understanding of the anatomy and normal functioning of the kidneys, including their role in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, filtration of waste products, and regulation of blood pressure. 2. Attendees should be able to recognize common renal emergencies such as acute kidney injury, kidney stones, and urinary tract infections. 3. Participants should be able to apply evidence-based pre-hospital management strategies for renal emergencies, including intravenous fluid administration, pain management for renal colic, and recognition of complications such as sepsis or electrolyte imbalances in patients with renal issues.
